NKTI holds community forum to prevent kidney diseases

SAN JOSE, Antique June 25 (PIA) - -  The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) recently held a Lay Forum in the town of San Jose, in celebration of the Kidney Month this June.

The activity was also in line with the Renal Disease Control Program (REDCOP).

Hundreds of residents in the town of San Jose gathered at the Diosdado Macapagal Trade and Promotion Center, Dalipe and at the Multi-Purpose Gymnasium of San Pedro, all in the town of San Jose on June 22-23 respectively to attend the forum and to avail of free random blood sugar screening during the event.

Dr. Teresita Susan L. Jorge, Program Director of REDCOP – NKTI, explained to the participants the importance of the kidneys to the normal functioning of the body and the ways to keep them healthy.

She emphasized the significance of keeping a clean environment and having a healthy lifestyle in the prevention of kidney diseases.

Dr. Leoncio Abiera of the Provincial Health Office also affirmed during the forum that kidney diseases are closely associated with lifestyle, thus he challenged the participants to do their role in keeping their lifestyle healthy and encouraged them to avail of the services of the health center, regularly undergo urinalysis and blood sugar screening for earlier detection of diseases.

Prior to the forum, the Rural Health Unit of San Jose has conducted a free urinalysis covering all the barangays in San Jose and free random blood sugar screening during the event.

Mayor Elmer Untaran of San Jose and its Rural Health Unit led by Dr. Melba M. Billones with all the nurses, medical technologist and staff were all out in their support during the event.

Conducting Lay Forum in partnership with local government units has been done in other provinces as a partnership activity of NKTI and PIA to enhance the awareness of the communities in the prevention of kidney diseases.

The event was also in line with the celebration of the Kidney Month this June with the theme: “Kalusugan ng Bato ay Makakamtan sa Pag-aalaga nga Kalikasan. (LTP/PSM/PIA-Antique)
