DTI launches competition to hone young entrepreneurs in food innovation

SAN JOSE, Antique June 29 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here will tap the participation of the younger generation in the development of the processed food industry.

Information Officer Lynna Joy Cardinal said during PIA radio program interview that a contest dubbed "Competition for Innovation II" was launched recently aimed to expand the market of local products and promote the use of indigenous resources as well as increase income of farmers and processors.

 Cardinal said DTI partnered with the Department of Education to stimulate the students participation in this food innovation challenge, with Grades 11 and 12 students from public and private schools as prospective participants.

The activity also aims to create new or develop existing products,  hence the participants will undertake research and development of existing food recipes or new formulations.

 The contest categories are rice-based finger foods, Muscovado-based sweets/candies and root crops-based products.

 The outputs of the study will be food products properly packaged with mandatory information such as product name, ingredients, name of producer, address and telephone number which will be presented for evaluation during the Municipal judging on October.

 The finalists from the towns will compete at the provincial level in November this year where the winners per category will receive Php5,000.00 for the first place, Php3,000 for the second place and Php2,000 for the third place.

 The winners will be linked with the Shared Service Facilities for processed food. (JBG/VWV/PIA Antique)
