DOE promotes energy efficiency, conservation to Antiqueños

SAN JOSE, Antique -- The Department of Energy (DOE) called on the Antiqueños to support the program that promotes the use of energy efficient lamps in order to conserve energy.

“This can be achieved by switching to Light Emitting Diode (LED) or  Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs which require less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs,” said DOE officer-in-charge and chief science research specialist Engr. Jose Rey C. Maleza, Energy Industry Management Division of DOE Visayas Field Office during the recent E-Power Mo Barangay Forum in San Jose.

Maleza said the DOE, in partnership with the PIA, is conducting advocacy campaign to boost awareness on the importance of energy conservation, giving safety tips and ways in reducing consumption.

He also said some of the beneficial effects of energy conservation include the preservation of energy resources, mitigation of global warming, protection of the environment, reduction of health cost and development of the country.

For refrigerators, Maleza urged to minimize door openings because cool air escapes every time the refrigerator door is opened. He reminded to defrost it before the ice buildup becomes ¼ inch thick.

It is also important to turn off lights and other appliances when not in use, he added.

Maleza also warned on the dangers of using an liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-refilled butane canisters for household consumption as this could cause fire and will endanger lives and property.

He said there were a number of fire incidents caused by LPG-refilled canisters that had been reported.

“Butane canisters are used only on a one-time basis and must never be refilled with LPG. These portable camping stoves should only be used outdoors,” Maleza said.

The activity was attended by some 100 participants coming from the senior citizens sector, students, barangay officials, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries and the media. (JBG/VWV/PIA Antique)
